Adoption isn’t “giving up” your baby. It’s doing the best you can for your child. It’s about love and hope. It’s about doing what you can to make sure your child has what he or she needs to be successful in life. It’s about taking a difficult situation and finding a way to make it into a positive experience. Even if you think you know what you should do it makes sense to talk with someone about your options. Adoption has changed so much over the years.

Is Adoption an Option For You?
If you decide you want to consider adoption, the next step is to make an adoption plan. Think about what you would like your child’s adoption to look like and what kind of relationship you want with the adoptive family. Traditional thoughts about adoption have been replaced with open communication about the choices you can make and how much you can be involved in those choices.
There are generally three types of Adoption: OPEN, SEMI-OPEN & CLOSED.
Allows you to have a direct and ongoing relationship with your child and the adoptive family before and after the adoption takes place. You and the adoptive family will decide on the parameters of your contact agreement in advance.
You will receive letters, updates, and pictures of your child, but communication between you and the adoptive family would go through the agency or a designated third-party. Again, the type and frequency of the information would be decided in advance by you and the family.
If you choose to have a closed adoption, you will have no contact or communication with your child or the adoptive family. You will not receive pictures or letters regarding your child. Your placement will be strictly confidential. No one will know your identity except the agency and the court which will seal the records. This is what a typical adoption looked like 50 years ago. Today we encourage open or semi-open adoption unless there are extraordinary circumstances, but again the choice is yours!
